The Way It Was (2003)The Way It Was (2003)
Sheridan native Lucy Jamison chronicled her memories of early 1900s farm life in this 72-page collection of stories. Originally written for the author’s grandchildren, the booklet remembers Mrs. Jamison’s experiences growing up on the old Cary farm on Route 39 in Sheridan. Topics covered include daily and weekly chores, buildings on the farm, grape harvesting, maple sugaring, ice harvesting, and even what it was like to use an outdoor privy. Mrs. Jamison’s mother and father are lovingly remembered, as are the animals Mrs. Jamison befriended as a young girl. Accessible to readers of all ages, the booklet recalls a time before “supermarkets” and “washing machines,” when telephones and automobiles were the latest novelty.
