The Way It Was (2003)
Sheridan
native Lucy Jamison chronicled her memories of early 1900s farm life
in this 72-page collection of stories. Originally written
for the author’s grandchildren, the booklet remembers Mrs.
Jamison’s experiences growing up on the old Cary farm on Route
39 in Sheridan. Topics covered include daily and weekly chores, buildings
on the farm, grape harvesting, maple sugaring, ice harvesting, and
even what it was like to use an outdoor privy. Mrs. Jamison’s
mother and father are lovingly remembered, as are the animals Mrs.
Jamison befriended as a young girl. Accessible to readers of all
ages, the booklet recalls a time before “supermarkets” and “washing
machines,” when telephones and automobiles were the latest
novelty.

Now and Then Bicentennial Commemorative Edition (2004)

the publication includes extensive articles as well as transcriptions
of several early documents. The time period considered is the “frontier” period
between 1804 and 1827, when the town was officially incorporated.
Topics covered include: local Native American history; Francis Webber,
Hezadiah Stebbins, and the first recorded settlement of the town;
taverns; post offices; schools; churches; the War of 1812, including
documented soldiers from Sheridan; mills; Sheridan’s first
ship captain and construction of the schooner Kingbird; the Haven & Kenyon
redware pottery shop; and the incorporation and naming of the town
in 1827.
